Have you ever wanted to get hold of the latest book released by your favourite author, only to find that it’s going to take a while to dispatch or your local bookstore has sold out? Well there is a solution available – download an audio book available from top publishers and then listen to it in the comfort of your own home or while you are on the move. What Are Audio Books?

Audio books are downloadable spoken word audio content titles by authors that can be burnt onto CD and downloaded onto your ipod or mp3 player. They are available in two formats: MP3 and WMA. These formats will play on PC’s, Macintosh machines and on many portable players. It helps if you have a high speed connection as you will be able to quickly download high quality audio files. There is also often opportunity to listen to samples of these books.

Never given thought to seek out unabridged selections in your audio book purchases? Unabridged audiobooks can offer more listening experience per minute for a lower cost. But what’s the difference?

Unabridged audio books include basically any book recorded whole. Usually recorded as the author (and usually the editor) intended it published in its original print form, they receive little or no editing. In other words if the print version of the book contains 500 pages, every word, sentence and paragraph from those pages will transfer to an audio format.

On the other hand an abridged audio book works just the opposite. Condensed from its original form, the author and or editor approve this version before production. Condensing may squeeze that 500 page book into 200 pages worth of recording. Often called the "reader’s digest" version in audio book form, you’ll certainly find it much shorter than the original. As an example of this you might think of a movie adaptation of a book as an abridged version of the original work.

Many times the reasons to abridge are to save space. Where an unabridged audio book would take maybe twelve CD’s, the abridged version might take only four. The publisher can then charge a slightly less amount for the abridged version and earn more profit without losing much from the story?.Or do they?

As an example for cost and size I looked up one of my favorite titles by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen, The One Minute Millionaire. The abridged version consists of three CDs that run 3 hours and 20 minutes and costs about $24. The unabridged version offers 10 CDs that run for 12 hours 21 minutes and retails around $58. Although I haven’t listened to the abridged version I have to wonder just how much information was left out and what possible important parts.

Looking at the example I gave, for a little more than twice the price you get almost four times the listening experience and knowledge! The example prices I gave are retail. By using an audiobook club such as SimplyAudiobooks or Audible that offers titles for purchase or rental the savings could be much much more.

To get the most enjoyment out of your audio book selections look to see if an unabridged versions is available. For the most cost savings join an audio book club and get unabridged titles whenever you can.

There is no doubt about it…

I am a book lover.

I love books and have been reading since I was a little baby. My parents made sure they instilled the love of books in me. Unlike my other mates throughout school who always had problems reading, I never had such problems.

Reading was fun to me. It was something I would do, not because I had to get good grades in school, but because I just loved to.

Like you would expect, I carried this love for books into my adulthood.

To tell you how serious this love is, I even met my wife in the library where I went to get a book I had heard so much about.

Now that I have kids I still read. My love for books is so great that I have instilled the same love into my kids too.

I used to make it a habit to read to my kids EVERY night before they went to bed, no matter how tired I am when I get home from my job.

I didn’t expect it to, but because I worked long hours at my job, I always got very tired while reading to my kids at night. In many occasions I have even fallen asleep before my kids right whilst I’m reading to them!

Deep within me I could see that there just wasn’t any way I could keep up with the habit of always reading to my kids each night… unless I found another job that would take up less of my time (but still pay me a good wage at the same time – impossible to find such a job, right?)

At that same time that I was thinking of that, I was promoted in my job. This then demanded my presence at the office one hour before everyone else, and – you won’t believe it – one hour AFTER everyone else had left the office.

Yikes, that’s the one hour I spent every morning reading a chapter on motivations and inspirations and one hour I spent reading to my kids after work – all going down the drain.

I was in a great dilemma about what to do. My wife suggested I give up reading to my kids at nights, and she would do it instead, but I just couldn’t let that happen since she had too much to do herself, and I didn’t want to add more responsibilities for her.

I was still battling for a way out when I discovered:

AUDIO BOOKS!

Eureka… the savior had arrived.

Six weeks after my first contact with audio books, my dilemma ha 1000 d ended.

Not only did I gain back my 2 hours taken by my job, I had added many more hours to my life because of audio books.

How?

First, I now get a 2 hour value of books every morning before I get to work.

During the 1 hour it usually takes me to prepare for work, I listen to an audio book.

During the 1 hour or so it takes me to commute to and from work, I listen to an audio book.

During the 1 hour or so I spend to have lunch and break times, I listen to an audio book.

Total time gained with audio books is 3 incredibly educative hours in the mornings and afternoons.

Now my job doesn’t have to take all of my time away from getting the value I get reading books.

Secondly, instead of spending the 1 hour reading to my kids each night when I get home tired, I played an audio book for them instead. Somehow I discovered that they seem to prefer the audio books to my reading.

I think I heard my daughter mumbling about how the voice from the audio book is "more awake than dad’s". This shows you how sleepy I got at certain nights while reading to my kids.

Now… aren’t audio books wonderful?

This is the 8th of 8 articles about why we should use Audio Books.

I am going to attempt to wrap up the last 7 articles and show you how to get the most out of digital – audio books.

I have given you 21 reasons why audio books are a smart idea.

For those of you that were on the fence, this should have put you over. I am going to give you one more reason why audio books are a great idea for you and your family.

I have shown you that it is very easy to help your children improve their reading skills. I have shown you how you can fill in your busy schedule so that you can also read books. Do you miss the times you read to your kids? Don’t you miss the time you used to be able to read?

Don’t you get tired of listening to the same music whenever you turn on the radio. Don’t you get tired of your kids running around like lunatics because they don’t have anything else to do? Don’t you get tired of the same old TV programs on. Even the new ones are just remakes of old ones.

You could "reread" the classics that you read when you were a kid or listen to a new biography or romance novel or science fiction book or anything else.

The huge numbers of audio books, with it’s variety will keep you busy trying to listen to them all for the rest of your life. They are easy to select, you can listen to excerpts, they are easy to download. You can be listening to a new novel, story, play, radio broadcast, comedy skit and many others in minutes.

Like they told you when you were young, the world is open to you just by reading a book. You could travel the world through the stories being told. Or you could live your life vicariously through the authors.

Finally, like I told you in the last article reading is great fun but if you want to retain what you read then you must read and listen to an unabridged audio book while reading the same book to get the most value out of reading.

But if you just don’t have time in your busy schedule or the same for your children then it is time to start a library of audio books. You can just load them to your computer or "burn" them to CD’s or mp3 players or iPods.

Remember, unlike books, audio books can vary from copy to copy just depending on who the reader is and if they make it interesting. They are not all the same book as each company will have their own reader and they will vary. So go to some where that has samples of the book, usually 3 to 5 minutes. Listen to the book and see if you like it. If not move on or get it if you do like it.

You would be amazed how many people today do not give a great deal off attention to information absorbed by their minds.
Your mind is ‘you’, being the main single factor that determines your characteristics as an individual.
