When it comes to burning (or copying/writing) a downloadable audio book to CD, you must be sure that it isn’t for commercial purpose, but strictly for personal use. Violating this law can get you into serious copyright infringement problems.

Yes, the downloadable audio books are still under copyright, even after paying to download them.

The only instance where they are no longer under copyright is when the authors or translators have died over 70 years ago. There are certain publications by government that are not under copyright.

But the rule of "only for personal use" is still ultimate when it comes to burning any downloadable audio book to CD or any other such formats.

You won’t believe it, but there are even certain audio book publishers that won’t allow their audio books to be copied to CD. Audio book publishers can easily disable the ability to burn the files to CD.

To be sure that your audio book publishers allows this, do check it out before going ahead to buy.

It will not be beneficial for you to buy it with the primary purpose of burning it to CD to listen with your CD player, only to find that you can’t burn it to CD.

Also, when it comes to burning audio books to CD, you might certainly need more than one CD for an audio book. For example, an audio book of about 10 hours can take as many as 7 CDs.

That being said, below are the steps to take to burn (or copy) any downloadable audio book into CD:

First, the computer you want to use to burn the audio book to CD must be equipped with a recordable CD drive and CD-burning software.

In other words, it is this CD-burning software that can burn the audio book to the CD. And it is the recordable CD drive that can be used for this purpose.

Second, play the audio book on Windows Media Player. Ensure that you choose "Full Mode" when doing this, not "Skin Mode".

Third, you will notice the "now playing" information displayed on the right-hand side of your Windows Media Player. If it isn’t displayed, you should click the "Restore the Video and Visualization Pane" button to display it.

Fourth, you can now click the "Library" tab. You will notice the "Start Burn" button displayed.

Fifth, at this point, insert the blank CD into the recordable CD drive.

Sixth, click the "Start Burn" button. Your Windows Media Player will begin burning the audio book to the CD you have inserted.

Lastly, if the audio book is larger than the CD (most always are), Windows Media Player will prompt you that it requires a new CD. You can remove the one inside and insert another blank CD.

When the entire burning process is finished, it will display the status as "Complete".

You’ve heard of audio books, or recorded books before, haven’t you? Many people, even the ones who use them daily, remain tongue-tied when it comes to answering correctly the following questions.

Why? My guess is that audio books in general are so convenient to use. Many of us prefer to venture into the scenes of an audio book without delay more willingly. Spending our precious time researching every detail about its creation remains a distant "maybe".

On the other hand, there are a few details about recorded books you want to know.

‘Cause knowing them makes it easier for you to navigate around audio books with more confidence. Your improved "shopper’s education" to make the right choice is worth it.

I admit I used to be unaware of even the basic terms about audio books myself. So, I asked questions to get answers.

Guess what? I’ve found them. And I’d love to share them with you so you can save time researching the same questions. If you’d like to know the answers to the following basic questions about audio books, keep on reading.

What’s an audio book?

An audio book is a book in audio format. It is a "fun replacement" for a physical hardcover or paperback book you’d read from cover to cover. Instead, you grab-n-read books on CD, books on tape, or MP3 books versions.

What formats do audio books come in?

You can get recorded books on tape, books on CD, and MP3 books. From an old-fashioned cassette player to modern and sleek MP3 players, audio books keep you company on-the-go where traditional book reading is simply unsuitable.

What’s an MP3 book?

MP3 books are still audio books. But a clever compression technique reduces the file size to take up less recording space. Besides that, MP3’s are portable and easily downloadable. Storing them is a breeze when compared to piling up stacks of cassettes or CD’s.

How can recorded books in MP3 format be played back?

You can play MP3 audio books on any MP3 portable player. You can also play them on your home PC (need to have Windows Media Player or similar). Playing MP3’s on a laptop or MP3-enabled cellular phones is the latest trend. If you don’t have an MP3 player, but have a CD player, you can burn MP3 files to a CD using your computer. You’ll need special software to do that. Search Google for "free software to burn CD’s" .

What does "unabridged audio book" mean?

Good question. An "unabridged" audio book is narrated (or told) word for word. It’s the printed book equal in audio format. Nothing’s missing. Nothing’s added. As a result, they are longer than "abridged" versions.

What’s an "abridged audio book" version then?

It’s similar to the printed original, but shorter. The word-for-word narration from the previous example is not exact. "Abridged" also means shortened, cut. Keep that in mind if you are looking for the original version.

What are "dramatized audio books"?

Dramatized audio books are stage-like, "play-life" versions of printed books. You get all the bells and whistles: full cast, music and sound effects. Some people prefer it; some would rather get a simple, told version by an experienced narrator.

Is there a difference between having the author of the physical book tell the audio version, or is it better to have a professional narrator do the job?

Some authors are gifted for both writing and telling their own book. Others are better off leaving it to professional "voice-over calibers". If you can, listen to a sample of the recorded book that catches your interest. It’ll help you decide if the narrator resonates with you. Some people swear that half the beauty of an audio book is the voice-over quality.

Where’s a good place to start for a novice interested in recorded books?

An excellent place to start is to pick up a favorite story you already know about, but would like to "read" as an audio. About the length, pick "abridged" audio books to start with to cut down on time they take to play back. Once you become more skilled with recorded books, you got to check out "unabridged" editions as downloadable audio MP3 books as soon as you can.

Downloadable audio books (also called MP3 books) are timesaving, easily affordable, and portable. The flexible MP3 file format makes them useful in both entertaining and educating us when we are on-the-go. You probably already know it.

But did you know this?

You can save extra time when you listen to recorded-voice MP3 files by increasing the tempo of the MP3 file. And you can do it free to boot.

Why would you want to go the extra mile and speed up an MP3 file? If you are into listening to many MP3 voice recordings especially for education, cutting down on the time is takes to listen to them comes in handy.

Many advanced MP3 players have the options of varying the playback speed. But what if the choices change the tempo and pitch of the recording? You’ll hear a bunch of chipmunks as a result. And what about if you have a reliable MP3 player without the extra bells and whistles. Should you part with it and shell out some dough to buy a more advanced model? No worries. There’s a way around it.

In the following list of steps, learn how you can alter the playback speed of MP3 voice recordings without paying a dime for a new, fancy MP3 player, or … for anything else.

Here is the list of steps. Take a look:

1.
Download the MP3 file and store it on your PC’s hard drive. Remember the file’s location.

2.
If you already have the Audacity Program, great. If not, go to audacity.sourceforge.net and download it from there. Follow the downloading and installation instructions.

3.
You will need LAME MP3 Encoder file on your computer. You can download it at audacity.sourceforge.net under the "Optional Downloads". The encoder file allows you to export MP3 files.

4.
Okay. You have your MP3 file, Audacity and the LAME MP3 Encoder file now ready to go. So, let’s …

Open the Audacity program. In the menu bar, under File, choose Open. Browse your hard drive and find the MP3 file. Once you find the file, choose it and click the Open button. It may take a short while for the file to export and open in the Audacity program.

6.
Do you have the file open now? Excellent. Now, under Edit (left upper corner), choose Select … > All. Your action now selects the entire MP3 file.

7.
Under EFFECT (in the same menu bar as before) … choose "Change Tempo…" (about 5th one down the column). A new window opens. You can see a slider bar with a window showing 0.0 percentage change. That’s the spot to alter the MP3’s tempo without changing the pitch.

8.
Now, enter the percentage change you want and preview the playback. Usually, somewhere between 10 – 50% change does the trick. Start at 10% and go up. Preview the playback with every % change you make.

9.
When you are happy with the playback speed, click OK. The rewriting process takes a few moments. Once it’s finished, you’ll see the original MP3 file duration display shorter by the % change you’ve chosen.

10.
Now, click somewhere in the big gray rectangle below the new waveform of the MP3 file. Make sure this deselects any portions of the waveform.

11.
Got it? Good. Now, go to File (left upper corner menu bar again) and choose "Export As MP3". A new window opens and gives you the choices to name your new file and store it. Go ahead and do that. You can add the word "FAST" at the end of the file name to recognize it from the original file later.

12.
Almost done. Close Audacity now. If you want to keep the original file intact "as it were", click on "No" and Audacity closes.

13. Now, all you have to do is to download the "faster" MP3 file to your MP3 player and boogie down the road, so to speak. If you need help with transferring downloadable audio books, MP3 books, MP3 music or any MP3 voice recordings to your MP3 player.

You are done. Congratulations! Downloadable audio books on-the-go can go even faster. See, it’s easy to speed up MP3 books, teleconferences, or any other recorded voice in MP3 format.
