Never given thought to seek out unabridged selections in your audio book purchases? Unabridged audiobooks can offer more listening experience per minute for a lower cost. But what’s the difference?

Unabridged audio books include basically any book recorded whole. Usually recorded as the author (and usually the editor) intended it published in its original print form, they receive little or no editing. In other words if the print version of the book contains 500 pages, every word, sentence and paragraph from those pages will transfer to an audio format.

On the other hand an abridged audio book works just the opposite. Condensed from its original form, the author and or editor approve this version before production. Condensing may squeeze that 500 page book into 200 pages worth of recording. Often called the "reader’s digest" version in audio book form, you’ll certainly find it much shorter than the original. As an example of this you might think of a movie adaptation of a book as an abridged version of the original work.

Many times the reasons to abridge are to save space. Where an unabridged audio book would take maybe twelve CD’s, the abridged version might take only four. The publisher can then charge a slightly less amount for the abridged version and earn more profit without losing much from the story?.Or do they?

As an example for cost and size I looked up one of my favorite titles by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen, The One Minute Millionaire. The abridged version consists of three CDs that run 3 hours and 20 minutes and costs about $24. The unabridged version offers 10 CDs that run for 12 hours 21 minutes and retails around $58. Although I haven’t listened to the abridged version I have to wonder just how much information was left out and what possible important parts.

Looking at the example I gave, for a little more than twice the price you get almost four times the listening experience and knowledge! The example prices I gave are retail. By using an audiobook club such as SimplyAudiobooks or Audible that offers titles for purchase or rental the savings could be much much more.

To get the most enjoyment out of your audio book selections look to see if an unabridged versions is available. For the most cost savings join an audio book club and get unabridged titles whenever you can.

In these tough economic times, we’re all looking for ways to cut back on expenses. Well, there’s a money saving card in your wallet – way at the back because you haven’t used it in a while. That’s right, it’s time to dig out the old library card. We all know that libraries loan out books for free, but it still seems like there are a lot more people shopping at the local bookstore or online at Amazon than at the library. Maybe it’s because they don’t always have enough copies of the latest books. Or maybe it’s that we forget to return books and then get charged a late fee. It’s time to take another look, because libraries are quickly becoming as friendly as the internet.

My local county library has contracted with a company call OverDrive, which offers AudioBooks and eBooks for download. Here’s how it works. The library has a certain number of copies of each book available. For example, my library has 21 copies of Eragon on AudioBooks. Anyone with a library card can go online and check out one of these copies. You download it to your computer, where it will stay for 14 days, at which time it expires. You don’t have to find the book and drive back to the library or risk a late fee. While it’s on your computer, you can listen to it, or if the license allows, you can burn it to CD or to your iPod! All of this is free to you!

If all 21 copies are checked out, you can put your name on the waiting list and you’ll be notified when the book becomes available. You can see the number of people in line ahead of you and how many copies the library has available, so it’s pretty easy to figure out when it will be your turn.

OverDrive also offers eBooks. This is a lot like the Kindle Books available from Amazon. You would have to purchase a reader, like the Sony Reader, which costs about $300. Then you could download books, magazines and newspapers to read on your mobile device. Most libraries don’t offer eBooks yet. They seem to be starting with AudioBooks to see how popular it is. If you’re interested in this option, let your library know. The more requests they get, the more likely it is that they’ll make it available.

Go to OverDrive.com to find out whether your library offers AudioBooks or eBooks, or go straight to your library’s website. If your library doesn’t offer this service, let them know that you’d like them to. Then make sure you have a library card!

If you have iTunes software installed on your computer, upon inserting the CD with your audio files on it, into your computer, all audio files will automatically upload onto your hard drive. However, due to certain restrictions, known as DRM (digital restrictions management), should you download any audio book directly from a site on the Internet, there is a slightly different process involved.

Passwords are required in order to first use digital audio files under DRM, after which they will have to be opened and a short process to ascertain legality completed for you to copy them.

Burn your audio files from the computer’s hard disk onto a blank CD, then, without ejecting it, open iTunes. Transfer the contents of your CD by clicking on "Import CD" which can be found by accessing "Devices", then "Audio CD" (situated to the left of the monitor).

Although the names of some of your audio files appear when transferred, many do not in which case place the cursor on the file e.g. Track 1, right click, and choose "Get Info". This will provide you with enough information to rename the track with a more easily recognisable name.

After you have renamed each audio file, start a fresh "Playlist" for them and drag and drop the ones you want into it. This will make it easier to access them when using an iPod.

If your iPod is set to Automatic Synchronisation, upon connecting it to your computer, all audio files, complete with Playlist and titles will routinely be copied onto it. If your iPod is set to Manual, on the other hand, you will have to select those audio files you wish to transfer and then select "Synchronise" in order to transfer them across. This Manual method is advantageous in the sense that you might not wish to transfer all the files together at that time, so can choose the ones you want and only transfer those.

Zipping large audio files is a good way to save space and can be transferred effortlessly to a portable hard drive for storage or as a backup. In this way, they do not slow down your laptop and can be easily accessed by unzipping them and then downloading them to another location. Alternatively, you can hear them straight from your computer’s hard drive.

Similarly, as books take up space in your home on shelves, audio books take up space on your computer hard drive. Therefore it’s advisable to set up a special storage device for them.

Naturally the greatest advantage of audio files over actual books made from paper is that you can take your entire collection with you on a portable disk drive ‘ wherever you go to enjoy whenever you want. And now that you’ve learned how to copy your files to an iPod, you have the freedom to do exactly that!

I guess it’s a funny old world when people enjoy reading using their ears rather than their eyes! But it’s not a popular trend with everybody.

Detractors moan that audio book CDs are too bulky, they get lost easily and you need a CD player to hand. The actor reading the story might not have the ‘right’ kind of voice and this is off-putting (especially if you’ve built up an ‘internal’ voice in your head already). We also hear that they’re a threat to traditional reading skills.

However, this ignores the broader spectrum: audio books open up great literature (and factual writing) to a wider audience and, as we live in the computer age, there are many different quick, cheap and convenient methods of delivery. Every town seems to have a new multimedia outlet springing up, providing all kinds of software and hardware audio products. But maybe the greatest advancement is in the ability to download audio book titles.

The most common route to follow is to download the audio book as an MP3 (although there are propriety formats which are often designed to restrict the amount of copying that can be done). MP3s are in common use and can be stored on your computer’s hard drive, burned onto a CD or DVD or transferred onto an iPod or MP3 player (for those who like to listen to ‘War and Peace’ whilst jogging!). The beauty of this method is that the original ‘master’ file is still on your hard drive, so if you lose your MP3 player or scratch your CD, you can still listen to your audio and transfer it to another medium when you’re ready.

With the introduction of the new iPod phones (and the clones that will follow by other manufacturers) downloading audio books will become even more popular. Imagine being able to make a call, take photos, listen to music AND listen to your favourite Harry Potter novel all on one small, portable device!

The best way to download audio book titles, then, is to join a subscription service. The companies providing this service have proliferated greatly over the last few years and most provide a reasonably priced and hassle-free download of your books. Joining these services need not be expensive and is not difficult to do. Browsing their extensive catalogue of fiction and non-fiction titles is one of my favourite activities, akin to wandering around a huge bookstore in town, but without all the crowds!

I realize it can be difficult choosing an online service for your audio books, but there are review resources on the internet (which you should definitely check out) and most of the companies offer free trial periods where you can evaluate their service and try out their systems and quality of books BEFORE you commit any hard cash.

So, there really is no excuse not to download audio book titles and try out what is going to be a hugely popular way to digest literature in the future!

At first, one would think they are losing money, why giving away for example a free audio book when they can charge for it.
